The Big Question: Are Refurbished Car Seats Safe?

It's the question every parent asks — and rightly so. The short answer is: yes, when bought from a reputable seller who follows a rigorous inspection process. The key is knowing what's been checked, what's been replaced, and what the seat's history is.

At Rascal Babies, we apply strict safety criteria to every car seat we sell. Here's exactly what we look for.

Our Car Seat Inspection Checklist

1. Accident History

We never sell a car seat that has been involved in a collision — even a minor one. Impact can cause invisible structural damage that compromises protection. Every seat we stock is sourced with a known, accident-free history.

2. Shell & Structure

We inspect the hard shell for cracks, stress fractures, or deformation. Any seat with structural damage is removed from sale immediately.

3. Harness & Buckle

The 5-point harness must click, hold, and release correctly every time. We check all buckles, crotch straps, and shoulder straps for wear, fraying, or damage. Harnesses that don't pass are replaced.

4. ISOFIX Connectors (where applicable)

5. Expiry Date

Car seats have a lifespan — typically 6 to 10 years from manufacture, depending on the brand. We check the manufacture date on every seat and only sell those with significant life remaining. The expiry date is listed in every product description.

6. Labels & Instructions

Safety labels must be legible and intact. We include the original instruction manual where available, or direct you to the manufacturer's digital version.

When Should You NOT Buy a Refurbished Car Seat?

  • If the accident history is unknown
  • If the seat is approaching or past its expiry date
  • If it's missing labels or has no traceable origin
  • If it's being sold privately with no inspection guarantee
